"Well...this doesn't seem very fair."[break][break]

The costume given to Luka by the owner of ♡ Meow-Meow's Massage and Grooming Parlor ♡ to promote their business is, quite frankly, adorable. Meowstic ears and a fluffy tail are the centerpieces of the budding contest star's ensemble, with plenty of ribbons and a fluffy skirt to match. Unfortunately, her partner hadn't been quite as lucky.[break][break]

Is there really much of a difference between a fursuit and a mascot costume? Does the intent make a difference? Luka isn't sure, but she can't help but find it unfair that @marshall has been given such an encumbering costume.[break][break]

"Are you going to be okay in that?" she asks, squinting at the mass of fur and large, unblinking eyes. "If it's too hot, um, maybe we can trade?"[break][break]

So long as he doesn't mind rocking a miniskirt halfway through their promotion, it seems like a fair enough deal.[break][break]

"Umm, I think I'll be okay," Marshall replied with a significant amount of uncertainty in his tone, his voice muffled by the enormous head of the Meowth fursuit he wore.[break][break]

The red-haired man had arrived at Slateport's Central Mall earlier that day after his agent had contacted him regarding some charity work. Information about the job's details had been sparse, but his agent had assured Marshall it was related to the Valor initiative started by the League government. Seeing as Marshall had assisted in other Valor-related efforts already, he saw no reason why he should turn down this one.[break][break]

But upon arrival, it became clear exactly what the parlor had in mind. The owner had whipped out two costumes for him and his partner, luka chêne, to wear while standing outside the store. In their fur-gloved hands, they carried brightly-colored flyers for the business.[break][break]

"So we're just supposed to hand these out to people in the mall?" Marshall asked Luka.

"Mhm! We hand them out and try to promote the shop, basically?" Easy enough, really. Except...[break][break]

Luka stares into the eyes of his giant Meowth head. They stare back. She's not sure if it's cute or unsettling— it's probably a little bit of both. And the costume itself has definitely seen better days.[break][break]

"I think your suit could use a little TLC though," she muses aloud. Delicate hands raise to smooth out bits of matted fur and fix a floppy ear. After a moment of consideration, she unties the ribbon in her hair and wraps it around Marshall's neck instead, making a cute little bow collar for him.[break][break]

"There! That's a start. And then, like..." Lips purse in consideration. "It's, like, all about the performance, you know? You've got to sound cute too! Like, um...please take this flyer, nya...or something like that. Oh...and a pose! You need a cute pose too!"[break][break]

Marshall instinctively tried looking down to admire Luka's handiwork with the ribbon, but the bulbous head of the costume meant he couldn't see it at all. In fact, he could barely see his own fur-covered shoes.[break][break]

"I have to sound cute?" he echoed hesitantly. None of his past experiences with modeling and acting in commercials had prepared him for this. He thought back on the cartoons he used to watch as a kid, especially the ones that used voiceovers so that Pokémon could 'speak'. Recalling one episode that had a Meowth in it, he pitched his voice higher and added a nasally sound to it. "How about this, nya?"[break][break]

Frankly, it sounded obnoxious to his ears, but Luka could be the judge.[break][break]

Then, as an afterthought, Marshall struck a pose he hoped was cute, bringing both hands up under his Meowth chin and cocking his head to the side.

"Cute is what we aim for," Luka confirms with a nod. "Ah, but no pressure! You already seem like a natural, so I'm sure you'll do great!"[break][break]

Just like when she'd worked with Fae Madden, she has the vague feeling that she'd seen Marshall somewhere before. Or heard him, maybe? She's always been better with voices than names. Once heard, always remembered! But the sound that squeaks out when he tries to sound cute is unlike anything she's ever heard before.[break][break]

Luka stares at him for a moment too long. And then, she starts to laugh. It's a good natured sound and far from malicious— bright as crystalbloom blossoms— but it trails on a bit longer than appropriate.[break][break]

"Sorry, it's not...," she stammers out between giggles, "I'm not laughing..." More laughter, "...at you. I-it's cute! That's all! You're adorable!"[break][break]

Giggles still float above them like soap bubbles as she adopts the same pose. "See? It's perfect!"[break][break]

Meanwhile, their stack of fliers is still untouched, and the looks they get from passerby are more bemused than anything.[break][break]

Even though Luka assured Marshall that she wasn't laughing at him, he got the sense he probably shouldn't use that nasally voice with passersby. "I don't know how long I can keep that up," he admitted with a chuckle. "Maybe I should just be my usual enthusiastic self."[break][break]

After deciding that, he turned to face the stream of visitors to the mall and held out one flyer of many from the stack in his hand.[break][break]

"Hi! Hello!" he exclaimed with exuberance at a young mother and her child, her Vulpix accompanying them. "Come see Meow-Meow's Massage and Grooming Parlor! Pamper your hardworking Pokémon!"[break][break]

The woman shook her head sharply and quickened her pace while her son made a face at Marshall — or, more likely, his costume — but the Vulpix, at least, gave him a thoughtful glance before bounding after her human.[break][break]

"Wow," Marshall muttered to Luka. "Cold shouldered."

"Well...it's fine! They're probably just in a hurry. If at first you don't succeed, right?"[break][break]

This time, when Luka tries to hand out a flyer with the same peppy spiel, she's similarly ignored. But the third time's the charm! Or the fourth. Or the fifth...[break][break]

After being brushed off so many times it's hard not to feel discouraged, but the cheerful smile on Luka's face refuses to come unglued. It's clear that just trying to harangue passerby into grabbing a flyer isn't working, so they've got to change tactics![break][break]

"I think we need a different strategy," she whispers over to Marshall. "Have you ever done contests? We're, like, super cute, but Pokemon are waaaay cuter. Just follow my lead, okay?"[break][break]

With the flick of her wrist, a love ball pops open with a shimmer of glittering stars. Luka's Clefable pirouettes into place, chirping happily and attracting the eye of a few shoppers already. A moonlight bursts above her, casting silver moonbeams down upon their little group. The stage is set...now all she needs is a partner![break][break]

While Marshall himself had never participated in contests, he'd certainly watched them before, the latest one being the contest in Verdanturf when he'd gone to cheer on Amelia Livy. He recalled how much enthusiasm and effort had gone into all of the contestants' routines, including playing instruments, doing tricks, and a song-and-dance number.[break][break]

"Let me see what I have," Marshall said as he rummaged in his costume's pocket for a Poké Ball. Unfortunately, the large, fur-covered gloves he wore were unable to make purchase on the small, slippery capsules. Frustrated, he ripped off the glove. "There we go."[break][break]

From a Poké Ball emerged his Sylveon, Vector, who glanced around and blinked in confusion.[break][break]

"Just go along with whatever Luka's Clefable does," Marshall instructed his Pokémon as he pulled the glove back on.[break][break]

Vector frowned and hesitantly stepped into the moonlight. She and her human looked over at Luka and her Clefable expectantly, waiting for instructions.

"Oh my gosh, cuteeee! I love Sylveon. You know, I have—"[break][break]

Luka cuts herself off. This isn't about her, and Cupcake is even tapping her little toes against the floor, waiting for instruction. "Okay, okay! Umm...let's use the routine from the new year's contest! We'll just improvise a few parts...it should be fine!"[break][break]

It's a bit awkward without music, so Luka pulls out her phone and plays one of the songs they'd used in a previous show— not the best quality, but they'll make due with what they have![break][break]

"Hellooooo Slateport!" She calls, not missing a beat even when passerby slow, but don't stop. "My name is Luka, and this is my buddy Marshall! And on behalf of Meow-Meow's Massage Parlor, we'll be putting on a show for you...nya!"[break][break]

It's the start of an adorable performance, really. And slowly, the improvised routine begins to gather a few onlookers. Cupcake leads her partner in a series of easy steps, their routine evoking the mystical feeling of fairies dancing on a moonlit lake. A combination of dazzling gleam and cosmic power collide in midair, creating a celestial shower that entrances the gathering crowd. The Clefable basks in the attention, beaming as she twirls under the light and thrilled to be performing without the pressure of an actual contest.[break][break]

A few people finally recognize Luka from her latest appearance on the contest circuit, and that pulls in even more of an audience. She giggles, takes selfies with fans, and presses fliers into willing hands. Even Marshall's sickly sweet costume garners some attention, with other shoppers asking the model for photos— even without seeing his face![break][break]

When she has a moment, Luka snaps a pic for herself as well(perhaps she'll send it to Amelia Livy someday?). So cute![break][break]

And in the meantime, their stacks of fliers begin to quickly deplete.[break][break]

Marshall had to admit: as soon as the song played and Luka started the choreography, she transformed their meager attempt at advertisement into a full-blown production. Marshall himself remained in the background, passing out flyers to everyone who stopped to watch the performance. Vector did her part as well, using COPYCAT to match Luka's Clefable step by careful step.[break][break]

"That was amazing!" Marshall exclaimed to Luka once they had given away their last flyers and had taken their last photos with fans who recognized them. He finally popped off the massive Meowth head of his costume. Sweat plastered his hair to his brow, but he was beaming with awe at Luka's cleverness and talent. "Really clever thinking there, Luka."[break][break]

Then he turned to the Pokémon at their sides.[break][break]

"You were great too! You deserve grooming and pampering now, for a job well done!" he declared. Vector looked up at him with those wide, baby blue eyes, expecting him to follow through. But Marshall turned to Luka once again and said, "I think we can go turn these in now. All that work got me starving, though. Wanna grab something from the food court?"
